Every child is somehow different from the other in terms of their nature, abilities, and qualities. But some children are special; they have their own special (extra) needs that are out of the scope of ordinary needs. If your child falls in the category of a child with special needs, then you need to realize that they also require special needs for learning, as well. Homeschooling is a big responsibility and commitment, but if you decide to educate your child by keeping him at home. You got many trade-offs when you left the public schooling system, but there are various benefits as well. When you take charge of your own child homeschooling, you can get free online books for kids.

Most of the free children’s books are available online on the internet as many children need individual attention for learning, so it will be easier for you to plan your day around family obligations, doctor appointments, and therapy. There are no distractions and bullies in the home school, and you can create a good and healthy environment for your child.

If you are convinced to educate your kid at home, then below are some tricks and tips that will help you out to become an effective and good homeschool teacher.

Create a Relaxed Environment for Learning

You have to designate a specific place in your home to educate your child. It would not necessarily be a standard or formal classroom with a chair and a desk. Well, it works for some children, and others do good in a random informal environment with bean bags and pillows. Many children thrive in a strict and organized environment but not extra overwhelmed. So give your child the space he needs but keep him away from any type of distractions. You should allocate some specific hours for homeschooling. Having a separate hour for both homeschooling and free time will help your kid to get used to an organized and disciplined routine.

Make Learning to Read Fun

Reading is one of the most challenging and rewarding tasks for any child. Many interesting kid’s books to read online are available that will help your child to develop an interest in reading. But it is a time taking the task, so, in the meanwhile, you need to keep patient and creative. You can use different methods to let your child learn quickly. For example, you can download children’s books online, which have basic alphabetical sounds in order to get your child familiar with the phonemic sounds, or you can also make interesting quizzes for your child on these phonemic sounds. There are also tablets and computer games on the internet that do the exact same thing. Your efforts will pay off once your child starts recognizing the letter sounds on his own.

When your kid starts to pronounce the sounds of letters, then let him practice as many times as possible by reading it in a loud voice. Find engaging and interesting kid’s books to read online, which encourages the child to read and then keep them practicing until they are able to read by themselves.

It all depends upon finding the engaging and good books that develop your child’s curiosity to read more and more. So always find the right books according to the interest of your children, such as whether your child likes dinosaurs, animal picture books or trains, it is important to keep the books on those topics, especially in the days when your child is more hesitant to read.

Homeschooling a Child with Special Needs

Go at Your Child’s Pace

It is important to schedule a daily routine for your child homeschooling. Children thrive on discipline routines as it is the most effective way to make sure that the outside distractions do not ruin your efforts. But it comes to how slow and fasts you go through the lessons; you should let your child to set the pace. If your child needs breaks after every half an hour, then do consider this factor.

Whether your child’s attention time is one hour at a time or 15 minutes, it totally depends on his personality and abilities, which he might have. If your child has less focus spanning time, grab each and every random opportunity in order to use them as a teachable moment for your child. For instance, a visit to your dentist might include the revision of the various types of teeth. Develop the habit of keeping a book along anywhere you go so that this way, you can use most of the time effectively while away from your home.

Homeschooling a Child with Special Needs

When You Get Frustrated, Take a Break

If you have a child with special needs like Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, blindness, deaf, or another abnormal condition that affects learning, the daily scheduled tasks can be mentally and physically challenging for you as a homeschool teacher. So it is imperative for you to keep yourself out of the overwhelming emotions and frustration of the whole day.

Be relax and flexible, instead of focusing on the things that you can’t control. There are some bad days come in homeschooling as well when your child becomes reluctant to learn, so it is better to give him space to take a nap or free time before studying again.

Tap Into Resources

Every parent knows the strengths and weaknesses of their own child. You know very well about the needs of your child. If your child is weak in a subject and you feel reluctant to teach, then you might hire a tutor or get training from any workshop. There is no other option when you take the responsibility to educate your child at home.

Words Puzzle

Make Time for Yourself

You should make time for pampering your own self. Whether it might be to go for a long drive or having a facial. A mani-pedi or anything else to recharge or refresh yourself. You should build terms with other homeschooling parents so that you will all help each other in hard times. Even if you are doing everything on your own, but you will always need a pat on your back to keep yourself motivated and positive.

Language skills are the primary concern of the parents for their babies. Their way of communication is a thing that parents can never take for granted. Although in schools, teachers pay extra focus to the language and communication skills, before going to schools, your child should be taught some language skills lessons. We are going to share some ways through which you can encourage your baby’s language skills. If you are new parents, these ways will help you greatly in bringing up your child with enhanced language skills. Without any further ado, let’s get started!

Talk, talk, talk:

To start with, the language skills that you use for daily conversation are the first lesson for your baby. If you have good language and communication skills, talk with your baby. Try to understand what your baby wants to say. Even if your baby is not able to talk to you, narrate him/her daily activities. For example, “now, you should take some sleep,” etc. Try to involve your baby in every activity that you do throughout the day. In this way, you will encourage your baby to enhance language skills.

Read, read, and read:

Reading is an all-time favorite of teaching your baby, language skills. For learning language skills, the internet is full of free online books for kids that would help you teach language skills to your kids. Seek help from those free books to read online for kids, tell them what is written on them, and then ask them if they understand. These free online books for kids enhance the communication and language of your kids even before they go to school. Although your kids can’t read these books by them at the age of 2-3, you can help them by reading the book and making them listen and understand.

Enjoy music together:

Music is another way of enhancing language skills. Little baby songs can lend you a helping hand in teaching your baby language skills. For example, you should sing “baby baby, yes mama” in front of your child, and he/she would love to hear the melody of the poem. You don’t need to be an award-winning artist to sing songs for your baby. You can also use your mobile phone or laptop for this purpose. Play the baby songs on the gadget, let your baby twirl on the songs and enjoy the rhythm of the baby songs.

Tell stories:

When it comes to learning language skills, how can we deny the importance of bedtime stories? The best way to interacting with your baby, which we inherit from our grandmothers and great mothers, is by telling bedtime stories to encourage language skills. Every night when you are on the bed with your baby to sleep, narrate your baby some exciting stories. You can also buy books that have bedtime stories of toddlers. Make a habit of telling your baby the stories of his/her choice so that they can develop the language skills every night.

Follow your child’s lead:

free children books

The one thing that you must keep in mind is that when your baby wants to discuss a topic if he/she likes to talk about a picture in the book, keep on talking about it. Don’t force your baby to go to other pages, but let him/her choose what he/she wants to read or listen to. For example, if your baby wants to talk about a picture in the bedtime stories book, let him/her discuss it with you without discouraging him/her.

Use television and computers sparingly:

Television and computer is a crucial part of every house, and of course, most of the people have them. You can also use these gadgets to encourage the language skills of your baby. Baby channels would help a lot in catching your baby’s attention and urge them to interact with the shows. Although babies can’t communicate with the TV shows, at least they respond to the movements that they see on the TV screen.

Treat ear infections thoroughly:

Your child’s health care is above all. If you ignore even the minor infections in the ears, it can go worse. If you see any ear infections, treat them thoroughly before it creates any complications. Pay more attention to your baby if you encounter such infections, for ear infections may lead to some severe results. Visit your baby’s doctor from time to time to get to know about your baby’s health condition.

Be responsive:

In the growing years, your baby develops language skills. He/she tries to talk with you by using some phrases. Sometimes, you understand what they want to tell you, and sometimes, you don’t. But in all the cases, try to be more responsive. Answer what your baby asks from you. Use coos and giggles for a conversation with your baby. It will also enhance their language skills.

free kids books

Speech expectations:

Your baby may not pronounce all the words correctly in his/her growing age. For example, he/she may pronounce “water” differently. Don’t panic too soon. At the age of 3 or 4, your baby becomes understanding. It is the age when you should start pointing out your baby’s mistakes. Correct the pronunciation, and teach them the right words. In this way, their language skills would improve in a better way.

How to spot problems:

When your baby is not able to talk, you must be more conscious about the health issues and alarms. At the age of 2 or 3 years, you baby can’t tell you the problems, so you have to know by yourself. Monitor your child’s movements, eye contact, pointing, responding to his/her name, and understand that an object is still present there if you hide it behind you. If you see any abnormality in your kid’s activities, consult a doctor immediately, and try to spot the problems.

Last words:

Narrating bedtimes stories or buy the books for bedtime stories for toddlers is the right way of developing the language skills, but all the activities that we mentioned above would something more than that. Adopt them and enjoy healthy parenting!

The post What Is Fluency and Why It’s Important to be Fluent readers ? appeared first on Doraluna Children's Books.

Fluent readers are the ones that read more smoothly and efficiently than non-fluent readers, so they are more likely to choose to read and gain more experience in vocabulary, ideas, and writing styles. Reading fluency is the capability to read accurately, at a suitable pace, with appropriate expression. Fluency is a vital skill a child should master in the first years of primary school.

Significance of Fluency

For many years, educationists have realized that reading fluency is a significant feature of reading.  More than 30 years of research indicate that fluency is one of the essential elements of reading since the development of fluency is linked directly to understanding. Fluency is very important to make reading more enjoyable for you as well as for others.

Reading fluency includes at least three main elements: a precise reading of a text linked to the rhythm of a conversation with appropriate expression. Children mostly suffered at least one of these aspects of reading: they make many mistakes, read slowly, or do not read proper phrases and sentences.  Readers who speak fluently will pick up and read a book themselves, even when not assigned to the class. However, the most important thing is that current reading leads to greater writing success, better vocabulary skills, and a better understanding of what is read.

Strategies for Fluency

The National Reading Panel has found data to support three strategies that enhance reading fluency,

  • Teacher modeling
  • Repeated reading
  • Progress monitoring

Let’s have a look at these strategies in detail

Teacher Modeling

Teacher modeling is the first strategy. Research shows that different forms of modeling can improve reading skills. It is more than listening to someone read. Children’s must participate actively 100% of the time in a multisensory manner. The teacher model teaches word recognition in a meaningful context, demonstrates correct writing, and gives children’s the practice of full-page tracking. The child can benefit from this strategy once he knows a minimum of fifty words and feels good about the beginning sounds.

Repeated Reading

Repeated reading is another strategy that research has shown to improve reading skills significantly is repeated reading. It is considered one of the most powerful ways to improve reading skills. It merely involves reading the same material over and over again until it is precise and expressive. Repeated reading is a method of fluency learning. Children’s will read the same words several times and begin to recognize them and can know them in another text. In addition to helping children achieve fluency, it changes the way children’s see themselves with reading.

Progress Monitoring

A specific goal is offered to people who play video games and relevant instant feedback on their progress towards this goal.  You give children a specific individual reading goal and tell them exactly how you will know they have accomplished this. Then it gives them the means to measure their condition. Finally, you make it simple enough so that they know they’ve achieved their goal before you even do it. This monitoring of progress is what motivates children’s to practice reading the same story over and over until fluency is reached.

Tips to Increase Fluency

Here are some tips for you to increase your children’s fluency

Inspire children to read to other people

Frequent reading is essential for fluency. Reading free online books for kids and listening to other people’s reading will result in better fluency. Inspire and boost children to read to other people other than parents or teachers, siblings, friends, or grandparents.  In the absence of humans, the children can learn to his/her favorite toy or pet.

Follow fluency practices

Raise your voice while you read and emphasize important words or phrases and similarly lower your voice, especially at the end of the question or in a sentence that ends with an exclamation mark. When parents and teachers read aloud, they create fluency practices that their children can simulate, such as punctuation break and explicit reading. Children should be encouraged to read a variety of texts frequently.

Ask them to read bedtime stories

Bedtime stories for toddlers help them to become fluent readers while enjoying their bedtime. Bedtime stories are not just about helping your child learn to read. Fluency is defined as the ability to speak or write quickly, readily, or smoothly. Not only that, but a child who can read fluently understands what he is learning and can do it more accurately and with appropriate expression.

Teach children to segment the words

Many children’s find it difficult to read fluently because they have difficulty understanding how words are used to form new words. Teach children to segment the words into meaningful sentences explicitly.  To start, you need to underline their sentences and encourage the sentences as a single phrase.

Read aloud to your child

Even if your child is old enough to read alone, it is helpful for him to hear from someone who does more reading for him. You will get a better sense of rhythm and intonation, and if you choose a variety of different types, you will appreciate all kinds of children’s books online.

Choose bedtime stories books considering your children personality

Nothing makes a child more interested in the book than knowing that the character has the same difficulties or fears as him. Choosing books that can help children find solutions to the problems they face is not only known as referral therapy to develop fluency but also deals with issues such as bullying. Different platforms are offering free online books for kids. Make sure to consider the best one.

A fluent reader not only makes the transition to a fluent writer much more comfortable than the non-fluent reader, but as children’s age, reading also plays a role in math, science, and social studies.  Children who lack these fluency skills have difficulty understanding words, sentences, and context. They are also not enthusiastic. They see reading as a duty, not a treat. However, reading children’s books online will help them. Consider these tips, and you will love the results.

Best Learning Games for Toddlers

Best Learning Games for Toddlers

Following are some of the best learning games for toddlers:

Identify Colors:

Colours are what the kids love to learn about. Many games are available online that would make your kids learn different colours with the help of colourful objects. The colourful interface of such games attract the kids, and they start getting interested in learning activities instead of wasting time on the pointless video games that can ruin your kids’ personalities.

Pairing:

Another way of involving your kid in the learning activity is to make your kid play pairing games. These games are available in match-3 format in which, your kid would match three similar objects. Many colourful and intuitive game interfaces add to your kid’s excitement, and he/she enchants to play pairing games. It is probably a good way to teach your kids different shapes, fruits and colours etc. Download such games from the internet now, and help your kids learn different new things that they don’t know before!

Sand Writing:

A good addition to the learning games is to teach your kids alphabets using kinetic sand or play-doh. What you have to do is to mold different letters with play-doh and let your kid recognize them. In this way, when they learn all the alphabets, fill a box with sand and let your child scribble away the letters. It is a healthy activity for your kids as compared to free online books for kids. Although children’s books online is a good way to teach your kids, the children get bored by reading books, and they want some change in your learning methodology. Bring a change in your methods, and sand writing is a good option for that!

Board Games:

Board games are the favourite games of not only the kids but also of the adults. When you play board games with your kids at home, they learn to take a turn, cooperating with the peers, accepting the triumph or defeat. It makes them grow and strategize the things gracefully to accomplish a task. It can be a healthy addition to your baby’s learning activities.

Sorting:

Sorting is a way of teaching your kid the sequence and the organization. Although, you kids may learn it in children’s books online, yet practising it at home would make it more clear to your kids. Provide your kids with some stuff and tell them to sort it. For example, write some names on the paper and tell your kid to sort the names alphabetically. You can also use other examples for sorting to teach your kids organization of the things.

Learning Games for Toddlers

Finger Painting for Color Recognition:

More than reading free books to read online for kids, kids love to play with colours. Although playing with colours creates a mess, but it’s okay to deal with a little mess if your child is learning something useful. Don’t compel your kids to learn the colours by heart from free online books for kids, instead give them the watercolours to play with. Fingerprinting is the best activity for colour recognition. Dip your toddler’s little angelic fingers into the colours and make a fingerprint on the paper, and tell your kid which colour it is. In this way, your kid would learn colours faster than reading it from children’s book online.

Best Learning Games for Toddlers

Hot and cold:

It is another exciting activity for your kids. Take your kid’s favorite stuff toy, hide it somewhere in the room, and tell him/her to search for it. If your kid goes away from it, shout cold and if your baby comes near it, say warm. Repeat saying like this until your kid finds the stuffed toy. This activity would teach your kid patience and struggling to get something. It also makes your baby realize that if you don’t see something, it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Hide-and-seek:

Hide-and-seek is the favourite game of almost all the children. They love hiding them and getting sought by other participants of the game. Don’t forget to play this game with your toddlers, for it teaches your kids to search for and struggle for a particular thing. For example, you can tell your kid to put the wrapper in the dustbin without telling him/her where the trash is.

Obstacle course:

Obstacle course can make your kid more passionate when it comes to overcoming the obstacles. If space allows you, we recommend you to make a track in your lounge or lawn. Put some obstacles in the path and tell your kid to pass these obstacles. It would make your kid jump, roll, and walk to pass the obstacles. This game would keep your kid active and healthy. So, when you are spending time with your toddlers, don’t forget to play this exciting game with your kids.

Play Simon Says:

Another healthy activity is to play “Simon says” with your kids. In this game, you can assign some task to your kids by adding “Simon says” every time before assigning a task. For example, you can say “Simon says to turn around” you baby would perform as he/she is asked to do. Start with the simple tricks and then move on to a little complex activity.

Last words:

Free books to read online for kids is undoubtedly a good way of teaching your kids, but learning can be fun if you add some games in it. Besides making your kid read free online books for kids, let them play and learn. It is how they would grow fantastically!
